The ad blockers prevent most advertisements from appearing on Web pages on mobile devices. They’re designed to shield users from potentially annoying ads, but also to enhance users’ privacy because many ads include tiny bits of code that allow marketers to track a user’s Web-browsing habits.

The “like” button is affected because it, too, contains tracking code. Facebook collects users’ browsing habits to help assemble profiles it offers to advertisers to target their messages.

Apple permitted ad-blocking apps with iOS 9, the new version of its mobile-operating system, which was released Wednesday. Several ad blockers shot to the top of the download chart in the App Store, although the creator of “Peace” removed it from the store Friday.

“The specific point of the like button is that most people know it tracks you even outside of and tailors Facebook ads for you that can be very creepy,” said Arno Appenzeller, creator of Blockr.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In the end, though, the kerfuffle may not have a huge impact on Facebook. The ad blockers affect Web browsing, but Forrester Research says smartphone users spend 85% of their time in apps, which are not affected.
