Google Maps has added Your Timeline, a new feature tracking past movement.

Google Inc. yesterday rolled out a new Google Maps feature that will either help you remember your favorite places or creep you out.

Google’s “Your Timeline” will show all the places you’ve been on any day you choose from your past.. Like Timehop, the popular app that shows your social media history on a particular date, the feature offers a glimpse into exactly where you have been.

The tool – zig-zagging lines of your paths on Google maps – could be useful for a range of tasks. It could help you track personal habits. If you’re health-conscious, you could check out how many times in a month you hit up a gym versus a fast food joint. You could use it to remember favorite spots on trips and make suggestions to friends.

Google Maps

But the feature is limited when it comes to recalling a place you’ve been only once. Chances are if you don’t remember enough details to find a restaurant on Google search, you won’t remember exactly what day you visited.

However, the app may be eye-opening if you do not realize how much data Google could be collecting already about you. It also presents some privacy concerns. Imagine if someone else accessed your phone or computer. If every place you go on a daily basis is so easily accessible, you may want to be more careful about sharing your password with a significant other.

  • significant other - 伴侶。

The feature is not currently available on iPhone or iPad. Android and desktop users can opt out by turning off Places You Go under the “My Account” settings. If you already had your location history turned off, Google may not have any places saved in your timeline yet.

Google isn’t the first to make this kind of information available. On Apple’s iOS you can access your frequent locations under the settings on your phone, but Google’s tool takes it a step farther as it shows everywhere you’ve been.
