The Toshio Kashio Memorial Foundation said it will hold an exhibition of Casio’s then state-of-the-art watches, including one of the earliest models in the world that came with a calendar, voice recorder and pulse-rate detector.

The exhibition will take place at the former house of Toshio Kashio, who along with his three brothers founded Casio Computer Co. in 1957. The house was turned into a museum after he passed away in May 2012.

More than 30 watches, including some released in the 1970s, will be on display. None could connect to wireless, of course, but some included groundbreaking technologies which enabled features such as schedulers and dictionaries that remain core elements of today’s smartwatches.

One to be displayed will be Casio’s QWO2-10. It was released in 1974 and came with the world’s first auto-calendar function. The CD-40, released in 1984, came with a “data bank” that could memorize up to 10 names and accompanying phone numbers, the foundation said in a statement.

In 1993 Casio released the CMD-10, which could be used to change television channels. Casio also pioneered watches that played music, in 2000 releasing the WMP-1.

The museum is open only on weekdays. The exhibition will start June 10. Entrance is free but reservations are required.
